Simplicity of Expression

The other pieces that made up the remainder of my project on German Expressionism are incredibly simplistic:
Girl with Braids by Karl Schmidt Rottluff is like a tribal carving, the subject of which appears to be transfixed by something, almost lifeless or in a trance. Original from collections.lacma.org
Nidden Coastline with Fishing Boats by Max Pechstein is very wishy-washy, vague and almost blurry which I think is intended to represent the tranquility and peace of fishing. Original from germanexpressionismleicester.org
Head by Alexej von Jawlensky is one of many studies by this artist, this being one of the more basic, almost annoyingly so. It is very easy to look at an image like this and question whether it even qualifies as art. I think that this is meant to represent a stripped back version of the human psyche; our primal, animalistic and instinctive side which has not been overlaid by socialist constructs and which acts without reason or logic.
